Ken's Wine Guide

“This clear and dark red colored Pinot Noir from Greenwing opens with a black raspberry and stony minerality bouquet with hints of black cherry and cedar. On the palate, this wine is medium plus bodied with integrated medium plus acidity. The mouthfeel is balanced, round, and seamless. The flavor profile is a black cherry and stony minerality blend with notes of oak and black plum. I also detected hints of tobacco. The finish is dry, and its flavors, acidity, and its dusty tannins are very nicely sustained. I would pair this Pinot Noir with beef bourguignon. Enjoy - Ken”

About This Wine

The 2024 Greenwing marks the winery’s first release of Pinot Noir from Oregon’s Willamette Valley, extending a project originally built around Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon into one of America’s defining regions for Pinot Noir. Greenwing describes the Willamette Valley through its vineyard slopes, cool marine influence, fog, and cool nights, conditions that allow Pinot Noir to ripen gradually while retaining freshness. For a label created to explore distinctive West Coast growing regions, Oregon is a natural next chapter. The 2024 season gave Greenwing an especially favorable introduction to the valley. A wet winter and spring replenished the soils before a steady growing season interrupted by only brief periods of heat. As fall arrived, warm days and cool nights helped preserve acidity while flavors continued to develop, and harvest stretched comfortably across several weeks. Moderate yields and an unhurried picking window gave the winemaking team the ability to select fruit progressively rather than compress harvest into a narrow period. The finished wine is 100% Pinot Noir, aged for ten months in French oak with 30% new barrels. Greenwing describes dark cherry and spiced cranberry layered with earth, baking spice, and cinnamon, followed by ripe raspberry on the finish. Silky tannins, medium weight, and fresh acidity keep the wine focused, giving this inaugural Willamette Valley release the balance and bright red-fruited character Greenwing set out to capture from Oregon.
