Vinous

“The 2024 Pinot Noir Chehalem Mountains is decidedly savory with a bouquet of crushed sour cherries, rosemary, cedar shavings, rose petals and dusty earth. Supple and pliant, its textures of pure silk carry mineral-infused red berry fruits and vibrant acidity across the palate. The 2024 finishes long and lightly tannic, as hints of tart blackberry leave a pleasant bitter tinge. 93+”

About This Wine

Composition Pinot Noir comes from one of the most intriguing partnerships in American wine. Bertrand de Villaine, co-director of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, joined forces with Katrina Rank after the two met in Burgundy, bringing de Villaine’s long-held dream of making wine in Oregon to life. Composition is where deep Burgundian perspective meets Oregon on its own terms. Composition’s Oregon identity is rooted in one carefully chosen vineyard. Set on a south-facing slope in the Chehalem Mountains near Ribbon Ridge, the site lies on Willakenzie sedimentary soils. Dry farming, organic certification, and biodynamic practices all serve a broader goal: healthier soils and a clearer expression of the vineyard. That same restraint carries into the cellar. The 2024 was fully destemmed, fermented in concrete with native yeast, then aged 10 months in oak. At 13.3% alcohol, the emphasis stays on freshness, structure, and site. Composition is a relatively new project, making this a rare chance to follow an ambitious Oregon project while its story is still being written.
