Romain & Simon Pillot’s 2024 Bourgogne Rouge comes from a single one-hectare parcel in Mellecey called La Pièce Carrée. The Pillot family has worked vines in the Côte Chalonnaise for roughly 150 years, and brothers Romain and Simon officially took over the six-generation domaine in 2024. At $36, this is a compelling introduction to a family now putting its own stamp on that long history. La Pièce Carrée gives this regional Bourgogne a specific identity. The southeast-facing parcel is planted entirely to Pinot Noir, with vines dating back to 1972 and through 2018, rooted in clay-limestone soils streaked with ferrallitic veins distinctive to the site. Everything is harvested by hand, giving the wine far more vineyard definition than the Bourgogne designation might suggest.  The cellar work is equally straightforward. The 2024 spends 12 months in oak barrels. Our tasting panel loved how it was showing already, and at $36, a single-parcel Pinot Noir with this much provenance is the sort of Burgundy find we wish came along more often.
