“Aromas of reduced cherry, raspberry, and purple flowers drive the nose of this Pinot. The palate builds on rich tannin and zippy acid with flavors of spiced plum compote, cedar, toasted spices, and dusty cocoa powder that ebb and flow throughout the long finish. ”

About This Wine

Marimar Torres did not come to Sonoma to imitate California Pinot Noir. She came carrying centuries of Catalan winegrowing history and went looking for the place where she could build something distinctly her own. She found it in the western reaches of Russian River Valley, where the Don Miguel Vineyard sits in cool, fog-laced Green Valley, roughly ten miles from the Pacific. Named for her father, Miguel Torres Carbó, the vineyard is planted at unusually high European-style densities, more than 2,000 vines per acre, an approach Marimar chose to encourage smaller yields, concentration, and finesse. La Masía, Catalan for “the farmhouse,” ties it all together: a Russian River Pinot Noir whose name, vineyard, and winery architecture all reach back to the family tradition she brought with her from Spain. That meticulousness carries straight into the cellar. La Masía is estate-grown Pinot Noir, traditionally hand-sorted, destemmed, fermented in small stainless-steel tanks with the estate’s indigenous yeast, and matured in French oak, with only a portion of the barrels new. The Don Miguel Vineyard contains several Pinot Noir selections, including Pommard, Swan, and Dijon clones, giving Marimar a range of textures and aromatic profiles to work with rather than relying on a single expression of the variety. The goal has never been sheer weight. It is Pinot Noir shaped by one of Russian River Valley’s coolest corners, where maritime influence and a long growing season can preserve freshness while allowing the fruit to develop slowly. The 2023 captures that balance beautifully. Raspberry and cherry lead into darker plum, violet, cedar, toasted spice, and cocoa, with bright acidity running through a palate framed by substantial yet polished tannins. There is richness here, but also energy and detail, the fruit carrying through a long, spice-inflected finish rather than disappearing beneath the oak. It is a compelling expression of what has made Marimar Estate distinctive for decades: old-world attention to the vineyard meeting the generosity of Russian River Valley fruit, with enough structure and freshness to make each glass feel both immediately inviting and built for something more.
