Hudson is one of those vineyards whose name has long carried weight far beyond its own cellar. Lee Hudson has spent more than four decades farming in the rolling hills of Carneros, where roughly 200 acres of vines have supplied fruit to some of Napa and Sonoma’s most celebrated producers. Chardonnay has become one of the estate’s signatures, and the 2023 Hudson Estate Chardonnay draws from three distinct estate blocks, Ladybug, Little Bit, and Seashell, planted to Heritage Shot Wente selections. Rather than treating those blocks as interchangeable, Hudson selects barrels from each to build the finished wine, capturing different expressions of a site the family has spent decades learning in extraordinary detail. That same attention follows the fruit into the cellar. The Chardonnay is harvested by hand at night, whole-cluster pressed, then barrel fermented with native yeast. The 2023 spent 22 months on its lees in French oak, 70% new, with regular stirring before being bottled unfined and unfiltered. It is a decidedly ambitious élevage, but the defining quality of the wine is not oak or sheer richness. Hudson’s Carneros site gives all that concentration something to push against, and the finished Chardonnay carries its generosity with remarkable energy. Lemon curd, pineapple and white peach move through a silky, medium-to-full-bodied palate, while stone fruit, toasted bread, almond and crushed-stone tones add layers of savory complexity. The finish turns mouthwatering and briny, extending the wine rather than simply making it bigger. That tension between opulence and freshness is what makes the 2023 so compelling. There is real breadth here, the kind of Chardonnay that fills the palate and unfolds slowly in the glass, yet it never loses its sense of movement. Twenty-two months of lees aging bring texture and depth; Heritage Wente fruit supplies concentration; and Carneros preserves the acidity and mineral edge that keep everything sharply defined. Only about 1,500 cases were produced, a remarkably small amount considering Hudson’s stature as a vineyard. For decades, other great winemakers have come to this property looking for extraordinary Chardonnay. The 2023 Estate bottling makes a persuasive case for experiencing Hudson through the hands of the people who know the land best.
