There is a certain symmetry to the 2023 Continuum. It marks **Tim Mondavi’s 50th vintage overseeing winemaking for his family**, arriving in a year that gave Sage Mountain Vineyard the luxury of time. The season was unusually cool and late, with 45.51 inches of rainfall early in the water year, budbreak running 20 days behind the estate average and bloom 16 days late. Summer followed with abundant sunlight but moderate temperatures, reaching triple digits only once. Harvest did not begin until October 3, and mild, dry weather allowed the estate to pick block by block through October 19. For a wine born high above Oakville, it was a season seemingly tailored to the site: long, measured ripening that preserved freshness while building depth, complexity and remarkably tender tannins. That site is **Sage Mountain Vineyard**, Continuum’s 71-acre estate on Pritchard Hill, perched between 1,300 and 1,600 feet along Napa Valley’s eastern ridge. Its red, rocky volcanic soils are shallow, low in fertility and exceptionally well drained, naturally restricting yields and concentrating the fruit. Forty-four individual vineyard blocks spread across predominantly western and southern exposures, planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Merlot. The 2023 Continuum brings those pieces together as **46% Cabernet Sauvignon, 41% Cabernet Franc, 7% Merlot and 6% Petit Verdot**. That unusually substantial presence of Cabernet Franc is central to the wine’s personality, bringing lift and perfume to the darker mountain fruit and mineral structure. The resulting aromatic spectrum moves through crushed rose petal and violet, red currant, cherry and darker fruit, with wild herbs, graphite and the savory mineral character that has become a signature of Sage Mountain. Everything after harvest was designed to preserve that expression. The fruit was **hand-harvested at night**, sorted twice, gently destemmed and moved by gravity into French oak and concrete tanks. After a three-day cold soak and fermentation, individual lots remained on their skins for 17 to 27 days before basket pressing and aging sur lie for 21 months, with 56% in new French oak, 43% in neutral oak and 1% in concrete amphora. Each vineyard lot was evaluated repeatedly before the final blend was assembled. What emerged is a Continuum built less around sheer mass than precision: silky red and black fruit, floral lift, savory herbs and volcanic minerality carried by freshness, concentration and fine, supple tannins. It is mountain-grown Napa Cabernet at its most articulate, but it is also something more personal: fifty vintages of Tim Mondavi’s experience distilled into one of the most important vintages of his family’s Continuum story.
