Barnett's 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon Rattlesnake Estate Bottled was aged 22 months in 93% new French oak, yet it handles that wood adroitly, leaving the emphasis on wonderfully pure notes of cassis, black cherries, bay leaf and cinnamon-like spice. Medium- to full-bodied, this wine is concentrated and rich, framed by ample silky tannins and capped off by a long, mouthwatering finish. With great fruit and subtle oak, it's another fine vintage under this label. 1,325 cases produced. I tasted this wine in both November 2025 and February 2026, and there was noticeable improvement over the winter (on the first occasion, I rated it 95+).

The flagship release from the estate vineyard on Spring Mountain, the 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon Rattlesnake was aged 22 months in 93% new oak. On the nose, brilliant red, blue, and black fruits are intermixed with candied violets, orange blossom, and spicy, herbal undertones, and this beauty is medium to full-bodied, has a pure, graceful, layered mouthfeel, terrific overall balance, ripe tannins, and a great finish. This classy, classic mountain Cabernet will keep for 15-20 years. Drink 2025-2045.

About This Wine

The 2023 Barnett Vineyards Rattlesnake Cabernet Sauvignon begins on a small, rocky knoll perched 2,050 feet above sea level on Spring Mountain, where the vineyard rises above the fog and captures long hours of mountain sunlight. Since its inaugural vintage in 1991, Rattlesnake has represented the pinnacle of Barnett's estate Cabernet Sauvignon, produced only from the finest individual lots that demonstrate the concentration, structure, and complexity worthy of the vineyard's name. In 2023, a long-awaited return of abundant winter rainfall ended years of drought, followed by one of the coolest growing seasons in the estate's four-decade history. The fruit remained on the vine until as late as November 20, allowing extraordinary flavor development while preserving the freshness and tension that define great mountain Cabernet. That remarkable vintage demanded restraint as much as precision. Winemaker David Tate kept every small estate parcel separate from harvest through élevage, allowing each block to reveal its individual character before the final selection was made. From the estate's total Cabernet Sauvignon production, only 37.9% earned a place in Rattlesnake. After a brief cold soak, the wine fermented in small bins and tanks, with careful extraction tailored to the naturally thicker skins produced by the cool season. It then matured for 22 months in French oak, 88% of it new, creating a Cabernet that balances immense depth with remarkable refinement rather than overwhelming power. The finished wine captures everything that makes Spring Mountain one of Napa Valley's most compelling places to grow Cabernet Sauvignon. Layers of blackberry, black currant, anise, cedar, mocha, cocoa nib, and black licorice unfold with remarkable clarity, supported by vibrant mountain acidity and finely textured chalk-like tannins that carry the wine effortlessly across an exceptionally long finish. Rich without excess and structured without austerity, the 2023 Rattlesnake possesses both immediate allure and the architecture for graceful evolution over the next decade and beyond. It is the kind of Cabernet that could only come from this singular hillside, where altitude, patience, and uncompromising selection combine to create one of Barnett Vineyards' most profound expressions.
