Feather was born from a remarkable idea: take the character of Washington Cabernet and give it a wine entirely its own. Created at Long Shadows as a Cabernet-focused project, Feather was originally developed with legendary Napa vintner Randy Dunn, whose influence belongs to the wine’s history rather than the making of the 2022 vintage. Today, the wine is made under Long Shadows Director of Winemaking Gilles Nicault. The 2022 is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, assembled from Columbia Valley vineyards selected to bring different dimensions to the finished wine, including historic Cabernet plantings at Bacchus and Dionysus dating to 1972 and low-yielding Block 10 at Weinbau Vineyard. It is a Cabernet built around place, blending the depth of mature Washington vines with the structure and precision that have defined Feather from the beginning. The 2022 was hand-harvested, lightly crushed and fermented in small stainless-steel tanks, with pump-overs managed throughout fermentation to develop color and structure without extracting coarse tannins. The wine then spent 22 months in French oak, allowing its concentration and tannin to gradually come together. The result is layered with black cherry, cassis and dark berry fruit, joined by violet, graphite, spice, earth and darker notes of chocolate, leather and espresso. Beneath that richness is a polished structural core, with finely integrated tannins and enough freshness to keep the wine focused rather than heavy. That balance of power and refinement is what makes the 2022 Feather so compelling. It has the depth and concentration expected of serious Columbia Valley Cabernet, but the wine’s appeal lies just as much in its detail: dark fruit framed by savory complexity, substantial tannins delivered with polish, and a long finish that continues to unfold rather than simply overwhelm. The vintage earned 97 points and an Editor’s Choice from International Wine Report, along with 94-point reviews from Wine Enthusiast and James Suckling. More than two decades after Feather was conceived, the 2022 shows how confidently the wine has developed an identity of its own: unmistakably Washington, deeply Cabernet, and built with the structure to reward time in the cellar.
