Few vineyards embody the Mosel quite like Piesporter Goldtröpfchen, the great south-facing slope rising above the village of Piesport. Here, Riesling grows in loamy gray slate, and the vineyard’s protected position and reliable water supply allow the fruit to ripen slowly while retaining the acidity that gives Mosel Riesling its unmistakable tension. Reinhold Haart’s 2021 Spätlese captures that balance beautifully: ripe fruit and sweetness are present, but they are carried by freshness, mineral precision and the cool imprint of slate. The 2021 was harvested at 90° Oechsle and finished with 69 grams per liter of residual sugar, yet at just 8% alcohol it remains remarkably light on its feet. White peach, grapefruit and darker berry tones meet smoke, minty herbs and florals, with suggestions of jasmine, lavender and violet emerging around the fruit. On the palate, there is richness without heaviness: concentrated, juicy Riesling fruit is sharpened by fine acidity and a distinctly salty mineral character, creating the push and pull between sweetness and structure that makes great Spätlese so compelling. What lingers is not simply sweetness, but energy. The finish turns focused, pure and increasingly racy, with ripe citrus zest and slate-driven salinity pulling the wine forward long after the fruit has receded. Mosel Fine Wines awarded the 2021 94 points and suggested a drinking window beginning in 2029, while another assessment sees potential through 2045 and beyond. This is Riesling built for both pleasure and patience: delicate in alcohol, intense in flavor and endowed with the remarkable ability to make richness feel almost weightless.
