There is something almost improbable about Emrich-Schönleber’s 2024 Monzinger Kabinett. Two freezing nights in late April devastated the estate’s early growth, killing roughly 70% of the young shoots and ultimately reducing the year’s crop by more than 40%. What remained, however, developed slowly through a warm but frequently overcast summer, allowing the grapes to accumulate flavor without racing toward excessive sugar. Harvest stretched into the cool days of October, and the Schönlebers emerged with wines they describe as exceptionally elegant and fine-fruited. In a vintage defined by scarcity, this Kabinett became one of the estate’s standouts. The fruit comes from the steep vineyards surrounding Monzingen, including Niederberg and Halenberg, with sources also identifying parcels adjoining the celebrated Frühlingsplätzchen. These are the same hillsides that have made Emrich-Schönleber one of the defining names of the Nahe, where the estate farms nearly 20 hectares and Riesling accounts for 86% of its vineyards. In the 2024 Monzinger Kabinett, that landscape is expressed with unusual delicacy: grapefruit and blossom, citrus and stone, orange blossom, nectarine and lime have all been noted, along with a distinctly saline edge. At just 9.5% alcohol, the wine carries remarkably little physical weight, yet never feels slight. The numbers explain part of the magic. Roughly 52 grams per liter of residual sugar are set against a formidable 9.4 grams per liter of acidity, creating a Kabinett in which sweetness is pulled taut rather than allowed to dominate. The effect is brightness, energy and movement, with fruit flashing across the palate before a long, salty, sharply defined finish. It is precisely the kind of contrast that makes great Kabinett so compelling: ripe fruit without heaviness, sweetness without softness, and intensity delivered through finesse rather than power. In 2024, after a growing season that took so much away, Emrich-Schönleber somehow ended up with a Riesling that feels almost weightless, yet leaves an unmistakable impression.
