Carlo Giacosa’s 2021 "Ovello" is a rare expression of terroir in motion—offering the structure of Barbaresco in intimate fashion, with only brief barrel aging that leans on purity rather than power. Grown at about 220–240 meters altitude, the precise site yields fruit with incense, cherry, and iron notes, chiseled into beautiful restraint. The vineyard’s compact soils, rich in limestone and clay, give the wine striking tension and a firm backbone. Carlo Giacosa vinifies with extended maceration—lasting 45 to 60 days—and matures the wine in large 27–30 hectoliter French oak barrels, creating a texture that feels expansive yet disciplined. This is Barbaresco in a more focused, soulful format, small-lot and intensely expressive.
