Wine Enthusiast

“This regal expression of Barolo comes from old vines in Monforte d'Alba's prized Mosconi vineyard. Aromas of dusty dried cherries lead a procession down a gravel path, accompanied by black tea leaves and whispers of cigar box spice. Warmed plums and fruit compote ascend on the palate, lifted by blood orange zest and fresh cut herbs. The elegant tannins, shaped by 30 months in French oak, descend like royalty on a grand staircase, floating not walking. The finish refuses to bid farewell, lingering like the last dance at a royal ball. A wine that makes time stand still. Drink from2027. Cellar Selection”

James Suckling

“This is so floral, with violets, roses, dark fruit and lovely sandalwood and cedar. A touch of flint, too. Medium- to full-bodied with such elegance and a long and rather endless finish. It goes on and on. What a wine. Drink after 2027.”

About This Wine

Pio Cesare had admired Mosconi for years before finally completing its acquisition of vineyards in the historic heart of the cru in 2014. Set in Monforte d’Alba, Mosconi is home to old Nebbiolo vines rooted in calcareous marl, a combination the family associates with both the power of the site and a more aromatic, finely textured side shaped by its elevation. The estate introduced its first vineyard-designated Barolo Mosconi with the 2015 vintage, thirty years after launching its original single-vineyard Barolo from Ornato. The 2021 vintage gave Mosconi a long runway to develop. Pio Cesare harvested the vineyard as late as October 18, describing the year as warmer and drier than 2019 while still producing wines with depth and structure. In the cellar, the Nebbiolo undergoes a long maceration in stainless steel before aging for roughly two years in large French and Eastern European oak casks, with a small portion spending limited time in French barriques. Extended bottle aging follows before release. Mosconi naturally carries more muscle than many Barolo sites, but Pio Cesare’s own description emphasizes the combination of that structure with softer, harmonious tannins, floral and spice character, and substantial aging potential. The 2021 has earned that pedigree in the glass as well, drawing 97-point reviews from both James Suckling and Wine Enthusiast, alongside 96-point scores from Vinous and Wine Spectator. It is a young Barolo built from one of Monforte’s serious sites, from a family that has been making Barolo since 1881, with decades of development still ahead of it.
