Anne Sewell Briggs - DipWSET

Champagne Colin Les Grandes Terres Blanc de Blancs Brut is complex and covers all the bases of fantastic Champagne. The wine opens with refreshing elegance and notes of acacia, white blossoms, crisp green apples, and ripe pears, complemented by subtle notes of white chocolate and freshly baked pastry that add a creamy mouthfeel, balanced with a chalky minerality. On the palate, the wine is lively and refined, with fine, persistent bubbles and a silky texture. Extremely bright acidity carries flavors of orchard fruits and citrus zest alongside nuances of freshly baked croissants, ending with a crisp, refreshing mineral finish.

About This Wine

Champagne Colin’s 2015 Les Grandes Terres comes from the chalky heart of the Côte des Blancs, drawn entirely from Chardonnay grown in the Grand Cru villages of Cramant and Oiry. These are old vines, averaging roughly 35 years according to the domaine, rooted in soils of clay over white and silty chalk. The 2015 vintage gave Colin the raw material for a Champagne of unusual depth, but its identity remains unmistakably Côte des Blancs: Chardonnay shaped by chalk, combining ripeness with the mineral tension and precision that have made these slopes among Champagne’s most coveted terroirs. The winemaking is deliberately focused. The fruit was vinified in stainless steel without malolactic fermentation, preserving the vintage’s natural freshness, then the Champagne spent seven years aging on its lees in Colin’s dark, cool cellars before release. The result is a mature yet energetic Blanc de Blancs, golden in color and finely effervescent, opening with melon and orange blossom before moving into honey, quince and brioche. Lime, candied orange and mandarin bring brightness to that richness, while the palate turns savory and saline, its ripe fruit carried by a firm line of freshness rather than simple weight. That contrast is what makes Les Grandes Terres so compelling. There is generosity here, with candied fruit and the deeper flavors that come from extended lees aging, but underneath it runs the cool imprint of chalk and a distinctly mouthwatering salinity. The mousse is integrated, the fruit concentrated, and the finish remains fresh and persistent. Made from 100% Grand Cru Chardonnay and given seven years to develop before leaving the cellar, the 2015 is Champagne built not merely around bubbles, but around place, time and texture: a Côte des Blancs Blanc de Blancs with the depth for the table and the precision to make the next glass almost inevitable.
