Wayfarer Vineyard occupies a rugged ridgeline in Fort Ross-Seaview, 1,100 feet above sea level and just over four miles from the Pacific. At that elevation, the vines sit above much of the coastal fog, receiving generous sunshine while cold ocean winds temper the afternoon heat. The vineyard’s well-drained Goldridge soils naturally limit vigor, and the estate is farmed organically. The 2024 Estate Pinot Noir brings together 18 individual blocks and nine Pinot Noir clonal selections, giving the wine a remarkably complete view of this singular coastal property. The 2024 season sharpened that contrast between warmth and cold. Days were warmer than average, yet nighttime temperatures fell unusually low, creating the greatest diurnal temperature shift ever recorded at Wayfarer. Increased coastal winds also thickened the grape skins, contributing additional structure and concentration while the cool nights preserved acidity. Harvest stretched from September 5 through September 30, allowing each block to be picked independently as it reached maturity. Winemaker Todd Kohn handled those parcels separately, harvesting by hand at night, fully destemming the fruit and allowing native yeast to carry out fermentation after five to six days of cold maceration. Only free-run wine went into the final blend, which spent 15 months in French oak, 43% new, before being bottled unfined and unfiltered. Wayfarer describes the 2024 with cherry, violet, raspberry, cranberry, cedar, rose petal and spice, carried by finely grained tannins and bright acidity. It is exactly what an estate bottling should be: not one favored corner of Wayfarer, but the vineyard in full.
