Louis Latour’s 2024 Puligny-Montrachet comes from a village that helped define great Chardonnay. Puligny sits between Meursault and Chassagne-Montrachet, with just 216 hectares of vines that also encompass names like Montrachet, Chevalier-Montrachet, and Bâtard-Montrachet. Its boundaries include some of the world's most celebrated Chardonnay vineyards. The raw material is exactly what you want from Puligny. Chardonnay vines averaging three decades of age grow in limestone and scree, are harvested entirely by hand, and yield around 45 hectoliters per hectare. That combination gives Latour the concentration and precision to let the village's character come through clearly. The élevage follows the same disciplined approach. After barrel fermentation and full malolactic fermentation, the 2024 release spent 8 to 10 months in French oak, only 15% new. Latour’s own cooperage supplies the medium-toast barrels, giving the house unusual control over the oak from stave to cellar. For a wine carrying the Puligny-Montrachet name, that restraint is exactly the point.
