There is a particular kind of Sancerre that seems inseparable from limestone, and Lucien Crochet has spent generations pursuing it. Based in the village of Bué, the family domaine traces its modern history to the early 1950s and today encompasses roughly 35 hectares spread principally across Bué, Sancerre, Crézancy and Vinon. Its Sauvignon Blanc grows on clay-limestone soils over Oxfordian and Kimmeridgian formations, including the locally named caillottes, griottes and terres blanches that define this corner of the appellation. Flint is notably scarce here. Instead, limestone dominates, and the 2024 Sancerre Blanc is built around that chalky, mineral identity. The cellar work is deliberately restrained. The 2024 is 100% Sauvignon Blanc and sees no oak, fermenting in temperature-controlled stainless steel between 14 and 18°C. From there, the wine remains for an extended period on its fine lees, with a late racking in spring and bottling held until the summer following harvest. It is an approach designed to preserve freshness while allowing the wine time to develop texture and depth before it leaves the domaine. Nothing in the élevage is intended to obscure the raw material; the emphasis remains on Sauvignon Blanc and the limestone soils beneath it. That combination gives Lucien Crochet’s Sancerre its sense of place: Sauvignon Blanc drawn from vineyards between roughly 240 and 280 meters in elevation, across eastern, southern and western exposures, translated through a cellar that favors stainless steel and patient lees aging rather than the imprint of barrel. The Crochet family has worked across generations to refine that expression, with Laurence Crochet and her son Clément now carrying the domaine forward. In the 2024, the story is wonderfully direct: limestone, Sauvignon Blanc and time.
