UV Vineyard was planted in 2001 by the late Ulises Valdez Sr., Aubert’s longtime vineyard manager and one of the most important growers in modern Sonoma. The site is defined by an unusual mixture of sand and dense clay that Aubert calls the “Sebastopol Clays.” That clay holds moisture through the warm summer months, allowing the Pinot Noir to reach full ripeness without excessive water stress and giving UV a character that is recognizably different from the other vineyards in the Aubert portfolio. That distinction comes through vividly in the 2024. Mark Aubert describes hibiscus, Isparta rose, and lilac layered over pure cherry and raspberry coulis, followed by ripe red berries, orange oil, tonka bean, and terra-cotta earth. Aubert directly connects the vineyard’s clay composition with the wine’s perfumed aromatics and voluptuous texture, making this a particularly clear example of how the winery approaches Pinot Noir through the identity of an individual site. Texture is central to the wine, with ultra-fine tannins and substantial density giving the 2024 a silky, enveloping presence. Yet the finish is lifted by fresh acidity, keeping that richness energetic and giving the wine the structure for continued development in the cellar. UV is one of Aubert’s most immediately seductive Pinot Noirs, but beneath that generosity is a distinctive Sonoma Coast vineyard story built on soil, farming, and more than two decades of experience with the site.
