Qupé’s 2023 Grenache draws on more than 40 years of experience with cool-climate Rhône varieties in Santa Barbara County. Long before these grapes became fashionable on the Central Coast, Qupé was exploring what the region’s dramatic day-to-night temperature shifts could do for them. The 2023 carries that history forward with mature-vine Grenache from Los Olivos District and Ballard Canyon, bringing two distinct expressions of the variety into one wine. Qupé builds its Grenache by harvesting across a range of ripeness levels rather than relying on a single picking date. That gives the winemaking team brighter, more energetic fruit alongside riper, more generous components, creating both range and balance in the final blend. A small 4% addition of Syrah adds another layer without pulling the focus from Grenache.  The cellar work gives those pieces time to come together. After fermentation, the wine is gently pressed and aged 18 months in French oak on fine lees, building texture while preserving the fruit at its core. With just 350 cases produced, the 2023 is a tightly focused expression of Santa Barbara Grenache from one of the region’s longtime Rhône specialists.
