Wine Advocate

“One of the top vintages I have had the privilege to taste, Philip Togni's 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate starts quietly, with delicate, pretty notes of bay leaf and violets, then steadily grows into a crescendo of mixed red and black cherries and cassis. This medium- to full-bodied wine is concentrated, rich and dense yet never heavy or overdone; it's tannic but without any harshness, exhibiting awesome length and elegance on the finish.”

James Suckling

“A classic Napa red with aromas of red and black currants, bark and dark mushrooms. Medium-bodied with firm and creamy tannins and a fresh finish. Chocolate on the palate. Drinkable now if you decant it, but made for aging.”

Vinous

“The 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is outrageously beautiful. Graphite, lavender, crushed rocks, menthol and dark spice emerge with great reluctance. Then again, the 2023 was bottled just a few months before this tasting. It's a vivid, explosive Cabernet that will need at least a few years to be at its most expressive. Poor set lowered yields by about 25%, resulting in an unusually potent wine here. Captivating.”

About This Wine

Philip Togni Vineyard has always followed its own path. The family’s ten-acre estate sits at roughly 2,000 feet near the top of Spring Mountain, where Philip and Birgitta Togni began planting in 1981 and made their first wine in 1983. The vineyard is planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, farmed organically by the family and almost entirely without irrigation. Every bottle comes from estate-grown fruit, giving the Tognis the kind of control over farming and winemaking that has defined the property from the beginning. The 2023 vintage gave this mountain site an unusually long season. Mild temperatures stretched ripening deep into the fall, and the Tognis did not begin harvesting until October 2. That measured pace suits a wine the family has never designed around immediate gratification. Philip Togni Vineyard Cabernet is conceived as a long-lived, Margaux-inspired blend, and the estate routinely holds back a portion of each vintage to release again at ten, twenty and thirty years of age. Few Napa wineries demonstrate their confidence in longevity quite so literally. That history carries unusual weight here. Philip Togni studied under Émile Peynaud at the University of Bordeaux and worked at Château Lascombes before building a career in Napa Valley; today the family continues to make its wines on the same small Spring Mountain property. The 2023 brings together that continuity with one of the estate’s most favorable recent growing seasons: mountain-grown Cabernet, slowly ripened, estate bottled and built with the expectation that its best years may still be well ahead.
