Opus One began in 1979 with a singular partnership between Baron Philippe de Rothschild of Château Mouton Rothschild and Robert Mondavi, joining Bordeaux tradition with Napa Valley winegrowing. More than four decades later, the 2023 vintage arrives from a growing season defined by abundant winter rainfall, a cool summer without notable heat events, and an unusually measured harvest. Picking began September 14 and continued through October 16, allowing the fruit to arrive at the winery at an even pace while preserving freshness and balance. Cabernet Sauvignon leads the 2023 blend at 81%, joined by 7% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc, 5% Petit Verdot and 1% Malbec. The estate itself occupies four vineyard parcels in western Oakville, including 100 acres within To Kalon Vineyard alongside the Ballestra and River parcels surrounding the winery. Under winemaker Michael Silacci, the 2023 spent 22 days on the skins followed by 19 months in French oak, continuing an approach that integrates vineyard management and winemaking rather than treating them as separate disciplines. Opus One describes the 2023 with red fruit, cherry blossom and dried violet, followed by graphite, forest floor and tobacco. Elderberry and cassis emerge across a palate framed by silky tannins, with black pepper, chocolate-covered orange peel, red plum and sweet oak carrying through the finish. The defining impression is balance: structure without heaviness, brightness without sacrificing depth, and a composition built with the long life in bottle that has always been central to Opus One.
