In a serendipitous discovery in 1990, Courtney Benham unearthed 1,500 cases of Ray’s wines, igniting a passion to revive the brand. Committed to honoring Ray’s heritage, Benham produces wines that authentically reflect their unique terroir, a hallmark of the Martin Ray experience. Their 2023 Concrete Chardonnay hails from the famed Russian River Valley. Whole-cluster pressed and fermented in concrete eggs, this Chardonnay preserves pristine fruit character while accentuating its mineral undertones. Deliberately bypassing malolactic fermentation and aging the wine on lees for six months yields a remarkably pure, fresh expression. Its soft texture, complex flavors, and satisfying finish create a truly captivating experience. VINEYARD SOURCING Dutton Ranch and Two Rock Vineyard VINTAGE NOTES A winter abundant in rain and cool temperatures led to late budbreak and a temperate spring. Moderate temperatures throughout the summer, with few heat spikes allowed for even ripening with higher-than-average yields. This long growing season resulted in ideal phenolic ripeness, with the fruit retaining its natural acidity, while developing incredible concentration. Winery Notes: Bright with ripe Jonagold apple and fresh cut pear, and touches of tangerine pith and Fleur de Sel. Racy acidity, with lemon cream and ample viscosity on the midpalate. Layers of salinity with citrus notes throughout, and hints of jasmine over a clean, linear finish.
