Ark Vineyard is one of the defining sites of Hundred Acre. The property sits beneath Glass Mountain near St. Helena, where Cabernet Sauvignon follows a half-mile arc through dramatically varied volcanic terrain. The vineyard is divided into nine blocks planted across nine distinct soil strata, including red earth, volcanic rock and obsidian. Vines were grown here as far back as the 1880s before the vineyard disappeared during Prohibition; after acquiring the property, Jayson Woodbridge spent five years rebuilding it. The first Ark Vineyard Cabernet was ultimately released from the 2005 vintage. The 2023 season gave that site an unusually long window to ripen. Napa Valley experienced one of its longest growing seasons in at least a decade, beginning with substantial winter and spring rainfall that replenished the soils. A mild summer followed, with relatively cool temperatures and abundant sunshine allowing Cabernet skins to mature gradually. Harvest for Cabernet stretched from late September into the fall, giving growers extended hang time without the compressed timetable created by major heat events. For a vineyard already farmed at extremely low yields, that slow progression offered the opportunity to make picking decisions block by block and pass by pass. Jayson Woodbridge has been the winemaker at Hundred Acre since 2002, and Ark is also home to the underground Ring winery where the estate’s wines have been made since 2005. Hundred Acre farms its estate Cabernet vineyards organically and takes an unusually exacting approach in both vineyard and cellar, restricting yields and separating vineyard parcels through fermentation and élevage. The 2023 Ark is Cabernet Sauvignon from a vineyard built around those details: one grape, one estate site, nine blocks, volcanic soils and more than two decades of work refining how that ground is expressed in the bottle.
