The 2023 Doudet-Naudin Meursault comes from one of Burgundy’s defining Chardonnay villages, set along the Côte de Beaune between Volnay to the north and Puligny-Montrachet to the south. Here, Meursault’s gently sloping vineyards lie over clay-dominant soils threaded with limestone and marl, a geological foundation long associated with the appellation’s distinctive combination of breadth and freshness. Doudet-Naudin brings its own considerable history to the bottle: the Maison was founded in Savigny-lès-Beaune in 1849 and remains devoted to expressing the individual character of Burgundy’s terroirs. The winemaking is traditional and deliberate. The Chardonnay is harvested by hand with strict selection, then pneumatically pressed under controlled temperatures. The must is settled in stainless steel before the wine is moved into the Maison’s cool cellars and oak barrels, where it matures for 11 months, with 20% new oak. It is a restrained use of élevage, enough to build texture and dimension without obscuring the character Doudet-Naudin seeks from Meursault itself. The result, according to the Maison, is a brilliant golden wine whose floral nose opens with white hawthorn and a light touch of vanilla. On the palate, this is where Meursault’s appeal becomes unmistakable: ample and powerful, yet held together by genuine freshness, precision, and elegance. Doudet-Naudin describes a wine of balance rather than excess, with delicate tannins shaping the finish and the capacity to gain greater length and richness with time. It can be enjoyed young or cellared for as long as a decade, but even in its youth the attraction is clear. There is generosity here, but also definition, the kind of Chardonnay that carries weight without losing its poise and reminds us why Meursault remains one of the great addresses for white Burgundy.
