Anne Sewell Briggs - DipWSET

“Domaine Les Bruyères 2023 Georges Crozes Hermitage is a classic style beginning with an enticing bouquet of garrigue, freshly crushed black peppercorns, ripe blackberries, juicy black cherries, and wild raspberries with nuances of black tea leaves and savory spices. On the palate, the wine is beautifully layered and complex, with concentrated flavors of dark plum, brambly berry fruits, cracked pepper, and hints of smoked meats and wild herbs. Vibrant acidity and finely grained tannins provide lively freshness, structure, a polished texture, and a complex finish.”

About This Wine

The 2023 Les Georges is where David Reynaud asks more from Crozes-Hermitage. Made largely from Syrah planted in the mid-1980s, this is the deeper, more ambitious expression in the Domaine Les Bruyères cellar. Everything about Les Georges is built for more depth, texture, and staying power. David Reynaud has spent more than two decades refining this style of Syrah. He took over the family estate in 2000 and steadily moved the vineyards toward organic and biodynamic farming, with the aim of keeping the vines and soils as expressive as possible. Les Georges is a natural extension of that philosophy: careful farming, older vines, and a site given the attention to show what it can do. The cellar treatment is where Les Georges really separates itself. Reynaud gives the wine a longer maceration, then divides the élevage among concrete eggs, amphora, and older barrels. Each vessel brings something different to the wine, building complexity and texture without making oak the headline. At under $50, this is serious Crozes-Hermitage for the money.
