The Wine Palate

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. It comes rolling out of the glass with bold notes of crème de cassis and juicy black plums, followed by hints of chocolate mint, violets, and licorice. The full-bodied palate is dense with rich black fruit and fragrant floral accents, framed by firm, grainy tannins and a lively line, finishing long and perfumed. Stunning.

All from two sites on Howell Mountain, the 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain reveals a mix of red, blue, and black fruits along with foresty, piney herbs, violets, and bouquet garni notes. It's deep and full-bodied, has a focused mouthfeel, building tannins, and integrated acidity that give it a serious, age-worthy feel. Based on Cabernet Sauvignon and aged 22 months in barrels, it's just another sensational effort from this vintage that deserves 7-8 years of bottle age and will be a 30+ year wine. Drink 2032-2058.

About This Wine

The 2023 Castiel Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon feels like the wine Maayan Koschitzky has spent his career working toward: precise, deeply textured, and unmistakably tied to its mountain site. High above the Napa Valley fog line, Howell Mountain’s volcanic soils deliver impressive concentration, freshness, and striking control. Only 280 cases were made, yet the 2023 has already earned exceptional scores, including 99 points from Lisa Perrotti-Brown and 98 from Jeb Dunnuck. Koschitzky understands that Howell Mountain’s real strength lies in its tension rather than raw power. The wine unfolds slowly in the glass, revealing layers of graphite, blackcurrant, crushed rock, violets, dark chocolate, and wild mountain herbs that gain even more detail with time. Twenty months in 70 percent new French oak adds polish and depth, while the mountain’s mineral backbone stays beautifully intact from start to finish. Dave and Kathleen DiCesaris founded Castiel with one clear goal: to capture Howell Mountain in its purest form. Every decision, from hand-harvesting to small-lot fermentation, reflects that commitment. Koschitzky brings the same discipline into the cellar, preserving the site’s natural structure and energy with remarkable precision. The result is far more than a high-scoring Napa Cabernet Sauvignon. It is a rare, authentic, site-driven Howell Mountain wine built to evolve gracefully for decades.
