Gilbert & Gaillard

“Intense garnet color with a complex, balanced nose showing black fruit, tobacco and fresh herbal notes. The palate is harmonious and persistent, carried by silky tannins and impressive length.”
95

James Suckling

“Warm bread, iodine, graphite, blackberries, cassis and some dark chocolate on the nose. Quite flavorful on the palate, with a medium to full body and masses of tight but small-grained tannins. Very long, tense finish with hints of walnuts and mussels at the end. Goes on and on. 66% cabernet sauvignon, 23% carmenere, 7% syrah and 4% merlot. 20% new oak barrels this year as opposed to the usual 15%. The rest is third-use, with some repurposed, re-toasted barrels. A very good value from VIK. Drink now or hold.”

Jeb Dunnuck

“An introduction into the producer’s main wine, the medium-bodied 2022 Milla Cala is always a blend of four to five varieties. Here, it’s comprised of 66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Carménère, 7% Syrah, and 4% Merlot, farmed and picked specifically for this wine and fermented separately before blending. It was then aged 18 months in French oak “Barroir” barrels, the proprietary barrels toasted from oak grown on the Vik property. Drinkable, elegant, and complex, it has supple, rounded tannins and a burst of rich red fruit seasoned in baking spice. Beautiful. Drink now through 2033.”

About This Wine

VIK built Milla Cala to bring its world within reach. It carries the ambition behind VIK’s back-to-back 100-point vintages at a truly reachable price. The 2022 earned 97 points from Gilbert & Gaillard and 95 from James Suckling, yet it lands at just $45. It is the easiest path into what VIK does best. That starts with Millahue. Twelve individual valleys give the team a wide range of exposures and growing conditions, while Pacific breezes and cool air descending from the Andes temper the warmth. The result is fruit with both richness and freshness, the balance that gives Milla Cala its shape. Cristián Vallejo has spent two decades making Millahue VIK’s own. Before joining the project in 2006, he worked in Napa, Spain, France, and Italy, experience that now informs a distinctly Chilean, Bordeaux-inspired blend. The 2022 was naturally fermented and aged for 18 months in Barroir barrels, VIK’s estate-driven approach to oak. Still just $45, Milla Cala makes a strong case for looking beyond the flagship wines.
