Silver Oak needs no introduction. The 2022 carries more than five decades of Cabernet tradition, built around the same idea that has defined the winery since 1972: Alexander Valley fruit, patience, and an American oak signature. Newly released after four years of aging and rated 95 points by James Suckling, this is one of California’s great Cabernet institutions doing what it does best. The 2022 vintage had to be earned. Spring frost reduced the crop before a relatively mild growing season gave way to an intense late-summer heat wave that accelerated ripening. The resulting berries and clusters were smaller, concentrating the fruit and giving the vintage what Silver Oak describes as depth, energy, and expressive character. It was a year that demanded quick decisions in the vineyard and rewarded those who made them. In the winery, the 2022 follows Silver Oak’s own path. The blend is 95% Cabernet Sauvignon, with Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Merlot, assembled before 24 months in American oak from Silver Oak’s own cooperage. Four years after harvest, that élevage has settled into the wine, with silky tannins and lively acidity through the finish.
