Lou Preston started planting Rhône grapes in Dry Creek Valley long before they became common in California. L. Preston Red is an estate-grown homage to the blended reds of the Southern Rhône, drawn from vines now averaging more than 40 years old. The 2022 production is just 508 cases, normally $48 at the winery. At $28, four decades of conviction have aged rather well. Preston feels different from most wine estates because it is, first and foremost, a farm. Across 125 acres, grapevines share the land with vegetables, orchards, olive trees, grain, pasture and livestock. The grapes are CCOF-certified organic, with Biodynamic practices and preserved wild areas encouraging biodiversity throughout the property. The 2022 release brings together 32% Syrah, 32% Mourvèdre and 30% Grenache, with 6% Cinsaut. Fermentation begins spontaneously, without commercial yeast or bacterial inoculation. This wine has more than a decade ahead of it. The harder question may be whether your case lasts that long.
