James Suckling

The 2022 Chevalier de Lascombes is a very pleasant second wine, one that is not trying to be too much. Ripe red cherry fruit, blood orange, spice, menthol and a touch of spice all build nicely in this gentle, open-knit Margaux. This is very good for what it is.

Jeb Dunnuck

The second wine of Château Lascombes, the 2022 Chevalier de Lascombes is beautifully textured and medium-bodied, offering bright cassis and darker, almost blue fruits, alongside spicy floral nuances. It has an elegant mouthfeel and a great finish. Aged in oak barrels, this should evolve well for 10-15 years.

About This Wine

More about the 2022 Chevalier de Lascombes Margaux: A magnificent performer at our tasting, the 2022 Chevalier de Lascombes captures the essence of Margaux with poise. From the storied grounds of Château Lascombes, it carries the heritage of a classified growth, yet distinguishes itself through a Merlot-driven texture rarely seen in the Médoc. The result is a profile that marries suppleness with structure, its polished tannins unfolding with immediacy and finesse. At the helm, Axel Heinz brings a pedigree defined by precision, shaped in part by his tenure at Ornellaia. His approach at Lascombes is deliberate, refining the estate’s voice toward greater balance, purity, and terroir expression. Under his direction, the wine gains focus, allowing its Margaux identity to emerge with elegance. Despite its designation as a second wine, Chevalier de Lascombes is crafted with the same care as the grand vin. Each parcel is vinified separately, then aged for approximately 18 months in French oak, building both structure and nuance. The result is a wine that is immediately compelling yet serious, delivering a complete expression of Margaux through a more accessible lens.
