Chateau Montelena Cabernet Sauvignon comes with more than a half-century of perspective, which runs through every bottle. Since Jim Barrett revived the estate in 1972, styles have come and gone, but Montelena has stayed focused on wines that reflect their vintage rather than chase the latest trends. This is not Cabernet Sauvignon trying to prove what Napa can be. It is wine shaped by decades of knowing exactly what it should be. That experience mattered in 2022. What began as a classic Napa growing season shifted when seven days of intense heat arrived just before harvest. The fruit moved from red-fruited elegance toward darker fruit, greater concentration, and a more supple texture. Montelena followed the season instead of forcing an expected style, capturing what the winery calls a singular combination of suppleness and concentration. The blend is 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot, and small amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, assembled for balance and structure rather than sheer power. The result is classic Montelena: a Napa Cabernet with the depth and structure to reward years in the cellar, yet enough balance and suppleness that opening one tonight feels equally right.
