Jeb Dunnuck

The 2021 Brunello Di Montalcino Pelagrilli pours a brighter shade than the 2020 and shows a more vertical, tension-driven profile. The nose reveals red cherries, salted orange, leather, cedar, dried flowers, and that classic touch of incense that feels so Pacenti. Medium to full-bodied, it has ripe tannins, brisk acidity, and a long, mouthwatering finish, and it’s hard not to keep coming back to it. Drink 2026-2040.

James Suckling

Gorgeous aromas of blackberries, black cherries, cedar, bark and spices follow through to a medium body with fine, integrated tannins and a succulent finish. Shows drive and intensity at the end. Give this three to four years in the bottle, but it’s already beautiful. Drink after 2028.

Wine Spectator

Broad and dense, this muscular red evokes cherry, raspberry, tar, iron, sanguine and eucalyptus aromas and flavors. Youthful and reserved, with plenty of potential in two to three years. Shows fine balance and length. Best from 2029 through 2049. 1,250 cases made, 700 cases imported.

About This Wine

This is the side of Brunello that made Siro Pacenti famous: polished and precise. The 2021 Pelagrilli comes from one of the appellation’s most meticulous producers, with Giancarlo Pacenti spending decades refining how Sangiovese from these historic vineyards reaches the bottle, from low yields to double sorting and individual-parcel vinification. Add a pair of 97-point scores, and this is a Brunello hard to ignore. Pelagrilli begins on the northern side of Montalcino, where the vineyards sit roughly 350 meters above sea level, exposed to continental winds. Clay-and-sand soils and mature Sangiovese vines shape the style the estate associates with this site: elegance, perfume, and individuality. It’s a lifted expression of Brunello, built as much on definition as depth. Then there’s 2021. In a vintage already being celebrated among Montalcino’s finest, the vineyard brings the lift, Pacenti the control, and the vintage the power. At $79.99, this is the kind of Brunello we want to buy when producer, place, and vintage come together.
