Prager has been making Port in Napa Valley since 1979, long before fortified wine became an outlier in a region increasingly defined by Cabernet Sauvignon. Jim and Imogene Prager founded their small St. Helena winery with Port at its center, and more than four decades later, the family remains committed to that original purpose. The 2021 Napa Valley Port carries that tradition forward under second-generation winemaker Peter Prager, drawing on varieties with very different histories in fortified wine but a shared ability to deliver depth, structure, and concentration. The 2021 is a blend of 69% Tinta Roriz and 31% Petite Sirah, bringing a traditional Portuguese Port variety together with one deeply rooted in California. That combination gives Prager a distinctly Napa vocabulary for fortified wine: Tinta Roriz provides the Portuguese foundation, while Petite Sirah brings the variety’s natural color, tannin, and concentration. The finished wine carries 8.7% residual sugar, placing richness and sweetness within the structural framework of two decidedly powerful red grapes. The result earned 93 points and Double Gold at the 2025 Orange County Fair Commercial Wine Competition. That recognition feels particularly fitting for a winery that has never treated Port as a sideline. Prager built its identity around fortified wine and has stayed with it for generations, even as Napa Valley changed dramatically around it. The 2021 is a compelling expression of that continuity: Portuguese heritage interpreted through Napa Valley fruit, made by a family that has spent more than four decades keeping one of the valley’s most distinctive traditions alive.
