Prager has spent nearly half a century proving that Napa Valley can speak fluently in Port, and Aria may be its most unexpected expression. Jim and Imogene Prager founded the winery in St. Helena in 1979 around Jim’s belief that world-class fortified wines could be made in Napa Valley. Today, their children continue that work, including a small collection of white Ports rarely encountered anywhere in the valley. Aria, named for one of Jim and Imogene’s grandchildren, takes Chardonnay in an entirely different direction: fortified, semi-sweet, and unmistakably Prager. The 2021 Aria is Chardonnay transformed. Rather than chasing the dry, oak-driven style associated with much of Napa Chardonnay, Prager builds Aria as a white Port, retaining 7.3% residual sugar and finishing at 18% alcohol. The combination gives Chardonnay an entirely different frame, with sweetness and richness balanced by the variety’s natural acidity. Prager positions it unusually broadly at the table, as a first-course or cocktail wine as well as a companion to cream-based desserts. That unconventional approach earned the 2021 Aria one of its strongest endorsements yet: 95 points and Double Gold at the 2025 OC Fair Commercial Wine Competition. For a family that has specialized in Napa Valley fortified wines since 1979, Aria captures exactly what makes Prager different. This is not Chardonnay trying to resemble something from Portugal, nor a conventional Napa dessert wine. It is a distinctly Napa interpretation of white Port, built from Chardonnay by a family that has made fortified wine its life’s work.
