James Suckling

“This red has a medium-to light-bodied palate with a lovely center of pretty ripe fruit and finely textured tannins that run the length of the wine. Light chocolate and hazelnut on the finish. Drink or hold.”

“This is the best showing yet for Latour's 2021 Pauillac. Intensely perfumed, the 2021 has gained weight and body since I last tasted it. Crushed flowers, black pepper, leather and dried herbs are just starting to open in the bouquet. Dark and rather virile, the Pauillac is super expressive today. The elevated presence of Cabernet Sauvignon comes through loud and clear. Brisk acids and beams of supporting tannin are also quite prominent, largely because the 2021 doesn't have the mid-palate richness of more opulent years.”

About This Wine

Pauillac de Château Latour was created in 1989 as the most accessible introduction to one of Bordeaux’s great estates. Originally developed primarily for the restaurant market, it is the third wine of Château Latour, drawn largely from younger vines and parcels that do not enter Les Forts de Latour. The distinction is one of selection rather than attention: the fruit belongs to the same Pauillac estate, passes through the same technical team, and is made with the same focus on precision that governs every wine carrying the Latour name. The 2021 is especially interesting because Cabernet Sauvignon takes an unusually prominent role. The final blend is 60.9% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Merlot, and 11.1% Petit Verdot, considerably more Cabernet than a Pauillac de Latour blend typically carries. That composition gives the vintage a distinctly Left Bank profile and reflects the estate’s practice of building each blend according to the character and quality of the individual lots rather than following a fixed formula from year to year. Château Latour also gives this wine something increasingly unusual in Bordeaux: time at the property before release. Since the 2012 vintage, the estate has kept Pauillac de Château Latour in its own cellars for roughly four to six years before bringing it to market, allowing the wine to begin its evolution under château control. The vineyard itself has been certified organic since 2018, while biodynamic preparations are used throughout the historic Enclos and on selected additional parcels. The 2021 therefore arrives not simply as the most approachable wine in the Latour family, but as one already given its first years of maturation before reaching the customer.
