About This Wine

More about 2021 GREG LINN PERNO BAROLO: In the sun-drenched hills near La Morra, where the clay and limestone soils of the Perno cru whisper of ancient seas and slow ripenings, the 2021 Greg Linn 2021 ‘Perno’ Barolo was born. This is a wine that begins with place: Nebbiolo vines trained on steep slopes, cooled by misty mornings, warmed by vigorous afternoons. The harvest of 2021 brought unusually concentrated fruit, and under the guiding hand of Greg Linn’s team, the grapes were sorted with exacting care, fermented gently, and aged with respect for texture and transparency. What emerges is a Barolo that doesn’t force itself into grandeur—it allows elegance and power to co-exist. On the nose, this Perno speaks in layered invitations. First, there is red cherry cordial, then a flicker of rose petal, followed by the darker echoes of tar and forest floor—not heavy but evocative. In the glass the color is translucent garnet, promising finesse over brute force. The palate carries the tension of Nebbiolo’s famed structure: supple tannins that gather rather than grip, bright acidity that breathes life through the mid-palate, and a mineral undercurrent that grounds the wine in its terrain. Flavors of wild strawberry, anise, leather and smoked tea unfold slowly, culminating in a finish that lingers with weight and whisper alike. What marks this wine as extraordinary—and unforgettable—is the attitude behind it. When the judges awarded it 97 points and named it “Wine of the Year Italy” and “Wine of the Year” in its class, they were recognizing more than numbers. They were acknowledging the discipline of vineyard management (yield dropped to allow extra concentration), the artistry of winemaking (barrel selections withheld until only the finest remained), and the sense of legacy (Perno cru, Nebbiolo’s homeland). In that bottle you taste hillside, heritage and human intention. And when you pull the cork, you don’t just open a wine—you step into a place, a moment and a promise.
