I want to take the varieties off the label," says Wim Truter, who'd rather people focus on the terroir and the quality of the wine. Cabernet Sauvignon-led, with a supporting cast of 41% Merlot, 11% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot, this is the latest in a run of impressive Rubicon releases, showing classic poise, elegance and refinement. Detailed, pure and well balanced, it has cassis, bramble and tobacco leaf flavours, scented oak and refreshing acidity.

About This Wine

Meerlust’s 2020 Rubicon carries the weight of history with remarkable ease. First released in 1980 as one of South Africa’s earliest Bordeaux-style blends, it helped shape an entire category and continues to define it today. In this vintage, that legacy moves forward with precision and composure, a wine shaped as much by the land as by the discipline and continuity behind it. Meerlust’s proximity to the Atlantic defines the wine’s character. Cool maritime air moves through the vineyards, moderating temperature and preserving natural acidity, while ancient soils contribute structure and depth. Each vineyard block is fermented separately, allowing its character to stand clearly before the final blend is assembled. Rooted in an estate established in 1756, Rubicon reflects a philosophy grounded in continuity. The 2020 blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot is aged for 16 months in barrel, building structure and refinement. What emerges is a wine of depth and balance, where supple fruit and finely knit tannins carry through with authority.
