The 2019 Xavier Gigondas is hitting the table at exactly the moment we want it. Nearly all old-vine Grenache, a touch of Mourvèdre, fruit from 30 parcels across Gigondas, and seven years of bottle age have carried this well beyond youthful promise. The intensity and structure have had time to knit together, leaving a beautifully mature expression of Gigondas without asking you to supply the patience. Those old Grenache vines are 80 to 100 years old, planted high on the limestone scree of the Dentelles de Montmirail. That combination of elevation and limestone is central to the wine’s character, giving all that concentration the freshness and structure it needs to stay energetic rather than heavy. In the cellar, Xavier's team wisely keeps the touch light. The fruit is fully destemmed, co-fermented in tank, then raised after malolactic fermentation in large wooden vats rather than small barrels. The Wine Advocate found no obvious oak imprint, instead highlighting old-vine purity, creamy tannins, concentration, and a long, vibrant finish. At $45, the real luxury is timing: mature Gigondas, already showing what those years in bottle were meant to reveal.
