Meyer’s 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon has already done the waiting for you. More than eight years from vintage, this Thomas Brown-made Napa Cab has had time to settle. Brown has overseen Meyer’s winemaking since 2009, working with Cabernet from Hestan’s estate in the rugged hills of southeastern Napa Valley. This isn’t a $50 Cab trying to taste expensive. It’s a $90 Cab that aged while someone else paid for the wait. In 1996, Helen and Stanley Cheng purchased a remote cattle ranch in southeastern Napa Valley. They planted to its natural contours, working with the shifts in elevation, exposure, and soil across the estate. The vineyard sits off the Napa Valley floor, and that site shapes Meyer Cabernet. The 2017 has moved past young Cabernet and still has life ahead. This is when Napa Cab is worth finding: mature enough to offer what a current release cannot, without another decade in the cellar. The original proposition was $90 and patience. Today it’s $50 and pull the cork.
