The spice and walnut aromas are so enticing. Undertones of blackberries and black truffles. Full-bodied, dense and layered with fantastic tension and seamless tannins. It goes on for minutes. All about classic structure and beauty. Try in 2021.

I was able to taste to two vintages of the Private Reserve, and the 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve comes from a vintage loved by the estate. The final blend is the normal 97% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Petit Verdot brought up in 85% new French oak. This full-bodied, ripe, voluptuous beauty shows the vintage to a T, offering a blast of sweet blackcurrants, licorice, ground herbs, and graphite aromas and flavors. Blockbuster styled, with full body and an expansive, sexy texture, it has the depth and density to continue drinking brilliantly for 20+ years.

Containing the tiniest splashes of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, the 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve has a deep garnet-purple color and nose of plum preserves, baked blackberries and cassis with hints of menthol, sandalwood and chocolate box. Full-bodied with soft, seductive tannins and a lively backbone supporting the generous, ripe, opulent fruit, it has a decadent spiciness and great length. 95+

About This Wine

The 2015 Beringer Private Reserve arrived at a pivotal moment in the history of one of Napa Valley’s defining Cabernet programs. That year marked Mark Beringer’s return to the winery founded by his great-great-grandfather, Jacob Beringer, and his first vintage overseeing its flagship Cabernet. The wine drew its backbone from Beringer’s mountain vineyards, with 62% of the fruit coming from Bancroft Ranch and Steinhauer Ranch on Howell Mountain, complemented by the Home and Chabot vineyards in St. Helena and fruit from Spring Mountain and Mount Veeder. The growing season itself was early and unusually small in yield, concentrating what fruit remained and giving Beringer a formidable collection of lots from which to assemble Private Reserve. The finished wine is 97% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot, matured predominantly in new French oak. It is a Cabernet of remarkable scale and polish: blackcurrant, blackberry, and cassis drive the fruit, while graphite, licorice, herbs, spice, walnut, and black truffle add darker, savory dimensions. Yet sheer concentration is only part of its appeal. The mountain fruit supplies structure and depth, while the wine carries an almost seamless texture, with dense layers of fruit drawn across finely polished tannins and enough freshness to keep its considerable richness in balance. It has the breadth of a great Napa Cabernet without surrendering the tension and architecture required for a long life in the cellar. The critics recognized something exceptional. James Suckling awarded the 2015 **99 points** and placed it **#24 on his Top 100 Wines of 2018**, while Jeb Dunnuck gave it **97 points** and Wine Advocate **95+ points**. Those scores capture what made the vintage so compelling, but the greater story is one of continuity and homecoming: a fifth-generation Beringer returning to St. Helena and taking responsibility for a Private Reserve tradition that began with the 1977 vintage. The 2015 combines Howell Mountain power, the complexity of multiple historic Napa vineyard sites, and the precision of a Cabernet built to evolve for decades. It is not simply a great bottle from Beringer’s long history; it marks the beginning of a new chapter in that history.
