James Suckling

A well-made, balanced and seductive Chateauneuf-du-Pape made of grenache, syrah and mourvedre. Aromas of sweet berries, roasted meat and dried herbs, with hints of sweet spices. It’s full-bodied with fine tannins. A juicy texture at the center, with succulent berry character. Focused and composed, with a delicious finish. Drink or hold."

Wine Advocate

Slightly oaky with notes of spices and dark berries, the 2023 Chateauneuf du Pape from Domaine Juliette Avril possesses a round, sappy and medium- to full-bodied palate with good depth at the core, concluding with a long, penetrating and fruity finish. This blend of 65% Grenache Noir, 25% Syrah and 10% Mourvèdre is a great effort.

Decanter

This has good freshness, focus and concentration, but the acidity feels quite out of place. Fresh and punchy, with quite robust tannins; it has some energy and drive, but give it time to soften. Certified Haute Valeur Environnementale.

About This Wine

Juliette Avril’s Châteauneuf-du-Pape is deeply connected to its origins in a way that goes beyond the vineyard. Her father, Jean Avril, helped establish the Châteauneuf-du-Pape AOC, shaping the standards that still define the region today. You can feel that lineage in the wine, not as nostalgia, but as a confidence and sense of balance that carries from the first impression through the finish. In the vineyard, that philosophy becomes tangible. Old vines, rooted deep in clay-limestone soils scattered with galets roulés, produce fruit with both concentration and purity. Grenache leads, supported by Syrah, Mourvèdre, and Cinsault, each contributing to a composition that feels unified, shaped as much by the land as by the choices made around it. In the cellar, the focus stays on preserving that natural balance. The team keeps intervention to a minimum so the fruit can speak for itself. In 2023, that approach comes through immediately, with pure red-toned fruit, fine threads of spice, and a structure that supports without taking over. It feels complete now, yet still carries the tension and composure to evolve with time.
