Breathtaking. Exceptional integration of super ripe blackberries and the very finest oak. The tannins build up beautifully, forming wave upon wave as the wine flows across the palate. Then the wave breaks on your palate and shoots way out at the finish, so that you wonder where it will end and normal life begin again. Needs time to soften, but this is so, so good. Give it two or three years.

As with the 2015, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve shows the vintage beautifully and is more pure, classic, and elegant. Notes of crème de cassis, graphite, lead pencil shavings, and freshly crushed rocks give way to a medium to full-bodied, seamless Cabernet that has remarkable purity of fruit and impeccable balance. Made from 97% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot aged in 83% new French oak, it’s more reserved and backward than the 2015 and will benefit from 2-4 years of bottle age and keep for two decades. 97+

Vinous

The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve is superb. Rich, deep and explosive, with tremendous density, the 2016 possesses notable character and breeding. The 2016 is a dark, muscular wine that will drink well for many years once it recovers from its recent bottling. A blast of dark cherry, plum, chocolate, leather and menthol punctuates the finish. Steinhauer and Bancroft Ranch form the core of the 2016. 95+

About This Wine

The 2016 Beringer Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon emerged from one of the great modern Napa Valley vintages, and it gave Mark Beringer a remarkable canvas for his second harvest after returning to the winery founded by his great-great-grandfather. At the heart of the wine are Steinhauer Ranch and Bancroft Ranch, Beringer’s prized Howell Mountain vineyards, whose mountain-grown Cabernet provides the depth and structure that have long defined Private Reserve. The 2016 growing season delivered an unusually favorable combination of steady ripening and balance, allowing Beringer to build a Cabernet of formidable concentration without sacrificing the precision that separates the estate’s flagship from simple Napa opulence. The final blend is **97% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot**, aged for **20 months in French oak, 83% new**. Everything about the wine speaks in layers. Crème de cassis, blackberry, blueberry, dark cherry, and plum form a dense core of fruit, opening into graphite, crushed rock, chocolate, baking spice, leather, menthol, and savory nuances. The palate is full-bodied and muscular, yet its power is remarkably controlled, with substantial tannins woven through concentrated fruit rather than sitting apart from it. That tension between Howell Mountain authority and polished Napa Valley richness gives the 2016 its identity: dark, structured and expansive, but also remarkably pure and composed. The critical response was extraordinary. **James Suckling awarded it 99 points**, while **Jeb Dunnuck gave it 97 points** and Wine Advocate, Vinous, and Wine Enthusiast each awarded **95 points**. Yet the numbers only hint at what makes the 2016 so compelling. Private Reserve has been a benchmark for California Cabernet since the inaugural 1977 vintage, and nearly four decades later, this bottling shows the tradition operating at full strength: elite mountain vineyards, meticulous selection, serious French-oak élevage, and a vintage capable of carrying all that intensity with balance. The 2016 is Beringer Private Reserve in commanding form, a Cabernet built not merely for immediate impact, but with the concentration, structure, and pedigree to make opening a mature bottle an event.
