Jeb Dunnuck

The flagship is the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve and it's a blend of 97% Cabernet Sauvignon and the balance Petit Verdot and Malbec that’s mostly from Howell Mountain, with small lots from St Helena, Spring Mountain, Mount Veeder, and Calistoga. Aged 20 months in 82% new French oak, it sports an inky, opaque color to go with killer notes of blackcurrants, scorched earth, hints of oak, graphite and minerality. Rich, full-bodied and beautifully concentrated, it's tight and backward, and is more reminiscent of a 2013 than a 2014. It has the purity to drink nicely today, yet needs 4-5 years of cellaring to show its potential.

Wine Advocate

Always the best of all of them is the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve, which in this vintage is a blend of 62% from their Howell Mountain holdings, 22% from St. Helena, 7% from Spring Mountain, 7% from Mt. Veeder and the rest from other sources. Only 7,383 cases were made of this blend of 97% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Merlot and Petit Verdot. The wine has an inky purple color, a big, sweet kiss of pen ink, graphite, cedar wood, licorice, blackberries and blackcurrants with some background oak, but it’s dominated by the fruit extract and the full-bodied richness and glycerin this wine possesses. The texture is open and lush, and the wine more forward and sexy than the 2013 was at a similar stage of development. It should drink well for 20-25 years, as these wines have an impeccable track record of ageability.

Aromas of blueberry and blackberry character. Hints of dark fruit, violets and stones. Full-bodied, powerful and dense with beautiful fruit concentration and silky tannins. Shows reserve and finesse with structure. Better in 2021.

About This Wine

Beringer’s Private Reserve has stood among Napa Valley’s benchmark Cabernets since its inaugural 1977 vintage, built not around a single vineyard but around a rigorous selection of the estate’s finest mountain and valley-floor lots. The 2014 is a particularly compelling expression of that philosophy. Howell Mountain provides the foundation, with Bancroft Ranch and Steinhauer Ranch accounting for 62% of the blend, joined by fruit from St. Helena, Spring Mountain, Mount Veeder, and Calistoga. It was an exceptional growing season: a warm, dry spring led into a mild, remarkably even summer without significant heat spikes or early rain, allowing Cabernet to ripen steadily while developing concentration, flavor, and phenolic maturity. The final wine is 97% Cabernet Sauvignon, with Petit Verdot and Malbec completing the blend, and it spent 20 months in French oak, 82% new. That élevage meets the intensity of the mountain fruit beautifully. Blackcurrant, blackberry, blueberry, and black cherry form the wine’s dark core, layered with graphite, violets, licorice, earth, spice, and oak-derived complexity. The palate carries the authority expected of a Cabernet built largely from Howell Mountain fruit, yet the 2014 is also remarkably polished: concentrated and full-bodied, with substantial structure wrapped in supple, silky tannins. It is a wine of power without heaviness, bringing together the mineral depth of Napa’s mountain vineyards with the generosity and seamless texture of the vintage. That combination earned the 2014 Private Reserve an extraordinary critical reception, including 96 points from Jeb Dunnuck, 95 from Robert Parker, 95 from James Suckling, and 94 from Vinous. More importantly, it belongs to a lineage with a decades-long reputation for graceful evolution in the cellar. Now more than a decade removed from harvest, the 2014 sits at a fascinating point in that journey: born from one of Napa’s outstanding modern vintages, assembled from some of Beringer’s most prized Cabernet sites, and crafted with the structure to endure. Private Reserve is Beringer at its most ambitious, and the 2014 captures exactly why this bottling has remained one of Napa Valley’s enduring Cabernet benchmarks.
