2018 BIALE R.W. MOORE VINEYARD ZINFANDEL

Dedicated to advancing and preserving California Zinfandel, if you’re looking for classic Zin, look no further than Robert Biale, where it all began in the 1940s with Aldo Biale selling wine over a party-line phone system. A “black chicken” served as a code word for a jug of bootleg Zinfandel and is now the winery’s flagship wine and a benchmark for the varietal.

One of the winery’s highest-scoring Zinfandels comes from the historic R.W. Moore Vineyard in Coombsville’s center, planted in 1905 and part of the U.C. Davis Heritage Vineyard project, where genetic material is studied and preserved. Cooling influences from the San Pablo Bay keep the grapes from developing overripe, jammy fruit characteristics, producing a brighter, more balanced Zinfandel, brilliantly portrayed in the 2018 vintage.
