2017 GAMBA “STARR ROAD RANCH” ZINFANDEL
Throughout my career, I’ve offered some of the best brands out there, but few have developed the kind of love affair that Gamba so clearly has. After Robert Parker’s latest visit to the winery, he alerted readers, “… Gamba’s name is going to have to be included with some of the stars of Sonoma, such as Hartford Court, Carlisle, Bedrock and even the superstar Turley over in Napa.” The 2017 Starr Road Ranch Zinfandel is hugely appealing, with intense raspberry, sweet plum, briery cherry and cracked black pepper. The wine perfectly harnesses fruit intensity, with old vine depth and remarkable balance.
Fashioned from an organically farmed vineyard planted in 1920, the ancient vines have relied on winter rains as their sole source of irrigation for over 95 years. Yielding just 1.5 tons per acre of strikingly intense, concentrated, pristinely focused fruit, the 2017 exhibits all the qualities that I look for in Old Vine Zinfandel. Carved from one of Sonoma Counties greatest vintages, this exemplary ancient vine Zinfandel absolutely shouldn’t be missed.

2017 GAMBA "STARR ROAD RANCH" ZINFANDEL
Winery Notes: "The 2017 Gamba Starr Road Old Vine Zinfandel is in a word, opulent...The aroma offers exquisite Luxardo cherries, cocoa, raspberries and subtle cedar.... Dark black fruits, candied nectarine, freshly baked pie crust and an ethereal note of sweet oak fill the palate, surrounded by a backdrop of lifting and zesty acidity to frame the wine. The texture is silky, seamless and balanced, with soft leathery, yet polished tannins. Focused and uncompromising, this artistic, and hedonistic expression of Old Vine Zinfandel will leave you satisfied and reaching for the next sip..."
From Jeb Dunnuck: "Slightly more restrained, the 2017 Zinfandel Starr Road Ranch Old Vine is similarly colored and offers a sweet plum, blueberries, sandalwood, and spice-driven bouquet. This carries to a medium-bodied, elegant, silky Zinfandel that has loads of character, as well as length. Aged 16 months in 40% new American oak (the balance was in used French and American oak), it’s going to keep nicely for upwards of a decade."
