Many chateaus in Bordeaux produce labels other than their namesake Grand Vin, producing second and third labels, generally made from younger vines and cellared for less time. The idea is to create a more delicate wine with increased approachability in its youth for more immediate enjoyment while aging the more expensive and structured bigger brother.

Chateau La Croix Montlabert is the second label of Chateau Montlabert, an estate initially founded in 1750 and acquired by the Castel family in 2008. To elevate the quality of the estate’s wine, they hired Hubert de Boüard, owner of Chateau Angelus as their winemaking consultant. The 2016 vintage is quickly becoming known as one of Bordeaux’s top vintages in the last decade due to a dry summer that reduced yields leading to intensely concentrated grapes for an exceptional gem of a wine.
