2012 ARIA DI CAIAROSSA TOSCANA ROSSO IGT
Each of the hallmarks that I love most about Super Tuscan wines get magnified by a couple extra years of bottle development. Tuscan wines are revered for being big, powerful, opulent, and in many cases those some qualities that define them, aren’t so easy to appreciate when they’re young. They’re often comprised of non-Italian varieties including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah and Cabernet Franc and it can take time for each of these grapes to harmonize just right. But when this symmetry occurs, it becomes clear why they’re some of the most highly-rated and desirable wines in the world. A great example is Caiarossa’s 2012 Aria di Caiarossa, which is both powerful and elegant with intense dark berries, cocoa and spice box. At under forty bucks this this is performing well above it’s weight class.
Located in Val di Cecina on the Tuscan coast, Caiarossa’s biodymanically farmed 16 hectare vineyard is planted to 11 grape varieties with each one selected based upon the soil type that best suits it. The 2012 Aria di Caiarossa blends together Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Syrah, and Cabernet Sauvignon, with each grape lending it’s own set of qualities and characteristics to the final blend. The 2012 is drinking absolutely beautifully now and with three solid scores this vintage, don’t wait too long to secure yours…
