2020 DOMAINE ARMELLE ET BERNARD RION LA CROIX BLANCHE RED BURGUNDY

A few wines we run across are intriguing on so many levels that they’re hard to define. This wine is undoubtedly one of them, and I’ll do my best to explain why. Domaine Armelle et Bernard Rion was founded in 1896 by Pierre Rion in the acquisition of vines from Chateau de la Berchère from his years as a dedicated sharecropper. The property has been in the family for five generations, with vineyard parcels in some of the most distinguished wine-producing villages, including Vosne-Romanée, Chambolle-Musigny, Nuits-Saint-Georges, and Vougeot.

The old-vine plots for “La Croix Blanche” are planted just south of Vosne-Romanée on sustainably farmed Pinot Noir vines averaging over 50 years, producing beautifully concentrated fruit. The 2020 vintage was fermented in concrete for around two weeks before spending 12-15 months in oak barrels, showing lots of dazzling red fruit character with undying savory mushroom and complex earthy qualities.

"Expressive, vibrant, and complex. Flavors of spice, earth, and dark fruits, with incredible acidity and minerality. From a single parcel located on the border of Vosne-Romanee and Nuits-Saint-Georges from vines over 50 years of age. Hand harvested, destemmed, fermented in a cement tank for 12 days before aging in used oak barrels for 12 months."
