2015 B. KOSUGE THE SHOP CARNEROS PINOT NOIR
Byron Kosuge spent his first 15 vintages immersed in Carneros Pinot Noir, soaking up details about the climate, vines, and terroir. So it’s a win for consumers when he set out to make a value wine, showcasing a pure, unadulterated expression of Carneros. Byron spent the first 15 years of his winemaker career at Saintsbury Winery in Carneros, where he meticulosity studied the region and surrounding vineyards. During that time he dedicated a lot of time with Brian Shepard and Tim Rodgers who farmed Saintsbury’s Vineyards exclusively. Lucky for us, when Brian & Tim planted a vineyard directly next to their Shop in Carneros, Byron jumped at the opportunity to make a wine from it.
The Shop Pinot Noir is classically Carneros with dense blue and black fruits, Asian spices, wild lavender and earth. It’s always been Byron’s goal to make a Pinot that expresses the flavors of Carneros and interestingly, the picking metrics (sugar, acid, flavor) that he uses today are strikingly similar to those used 30 years ago. The difference is the grapes are farmed better, with clones carefully chosen, better rootstocks and the climate is different. If you want to experience a great Carneros Pinot at a value price, don’t miss this one. And by the way, many of you might recognize Byron from MIURA and SMALL VINES where he’s made a number of ridiculously great Pinots.
