2014 BARBED OAK “ZARA’S BLOCK” PINOT NOIR
Many of the best values can be found in wine from previously undiscovered producers, and with a mere 133 cases produced, Barbed Oak Pinot Noir is one of them. Of course once it was in my glass, I became intimately familiar with the intense fragrance of vivid red berries and floral-infused bouquet, which is a direct product of the clonal selection. The wine combines the heritage clones Swan and Calera grown on a 4 acre plot in Sonoma’s Bennet Valley AVA. The area, which lies Southeast of Santa Rosa along a minor Mountain range, produces absolutely stunning fruit and the cooler climate allows the grapes to maintain acidity and develop deep flavors. At $23/btl you might want to get enough to share…
Barbed Oak’s Vineyard is perfectly positioned at 800 feet elevation, and neighbors Matanzas Creek. The vines are planted on steep hillsides that provide excellent drainage, which the Pinot Noir vines love. Those of you that have enjoyed other great value Pinots like Black Pine and Matias should strongly consider a case or two of this delicious Pinot Noir.

Winery Notes: "The Calera clone adds exotic aromas and spice, velvety texture, and pronounced acid while the Swan clone characteristically provides intense aromatics- from raspberries, strawberries and cranberries to violets. This wine is showing bright raspberries on the nose, strawberries and black tea on the palate with a balanced touch of acidity that lets a sip end clean and refreshing. Round chalky tannins fill out the structure. Great with food. Drinks beautifully now and will be a pleasure to open for several years to come."
