Calistoga offers an ideal climate for the Durif grape, AKA Petite Sirah, to reach its optimum ripeness and develop deeply enchanting flavors. One of my favorites is from Kenefick Ranch, and their tiny 8 barrel production of Estate grown Petite Sirah is rich and layered, with penetrating intensity, balanced by supple, velvety tannins.

A well-made Petite Sirah can gracefully cellar for up to two decades, and some of the best examples come from the Calistoga Appellation.  The area is distinguished by volcanic soils and the largest diurnal temperature variation in Napa Valley. The warm daytime temperatures allow the grapes to develop deep, compelling flavors, and the cool nights help maintain acidity and structure.

This quintessential Petite Sirah was expertly guided from grape to bottle by talented winemaker Kent Jarman, who’s also the winemaker at Coup de Foudre, and previously the assistant winemaker at Duckhorn Vineyards.  With around 5 years in the bottle, the 2013 is pure silk on the palate, and offers vivid impressions of muddled blueberry, Mediterranean spice, black plum and blue violet.
